Geoengineering is defined in Wkipedia as “proposals to deliberately manipulate the Earth’s climate to counteract the effects of global warming from greenhouse gas emissions“
Just writing that sentence makes me pause and wonder – who could possibly think that this is a good idea?
The fact that Jeff Goodells book on the subject is described as ‘refreshingly lighthearted’ should give us a clue to how seriously we should be taking this idea.
There is something so insane about ideas like putting iron filings into the sea to stimulate plankton, which in turn absorbs CO2, without understanding the other impacts of this activity. After all, aren’t we in this position because we have carried out ‘geoengineering’ on a massive scale already? Just because we didn’t understand that that is what we were doing with our coal burning power stations, millions of cars, deforestation, etc., etc., doesn’t mean that we should solve that problem by creating another one.
Geoengineering belongs in a category of processes that have brought us to the brink of climate change. Other processess are needed to bring us back.
